Big Water: Photographs of Virginia’s Eastern Shore by David Rathbone

Five years in the making, Big Water is an ode to an often overlooked part of the world. Surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean, Virginia’s Eastern Shore is a landscape that has been both changed and unchanged since Captain John Smith visited the area on his first explorations of North America.

“Growing up in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the Eastern Shore would show up like a mirage on the north horizon line across the Chesapeake Bay. Some days it was visible, others it was gone. A world away from the Navy bases and industrial shipyards of Virginia Beach and the greater Hampton Roads area, the distance seemed much greater than the 17 miles of water that separate the two areas.” - David Rathbone

This standard edition version of the book is limited to 75 copies. Each copy is signed.

A special edition of 20 copies, each paired with Platinum Palladium prints made by the artist, is also available.

A Book Five Years In The Making…

This project started in 2018 with a day-trip to photograph Kiptopeke State Park on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. It turned in to a five year project documenting the farmlands and waterways of this beautiful, often overlooked area of the country.

The quality of this printing is the best I could find after a year of searching for the right production partners. It would have been easiest to go overseas to make it, however it was a personal goal to make it as close to home as possible. Every detail has been considered. I’m overjoyed by the outcome and I think you will be too.

Kind words about Big Water…

“The photos of Big Water feel like home to me. I grew up on the Potomac River in a small town in the Northern Neck of Virginia. As an adult I've come to appreciate how that connection to nature has shaped me—grounding me with gratitude and awe. Your photographs act as witnesses to the often overlooked beauty of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Each image holds reverence for the Chesapeake Bay with views that show both its beauty and bounty. Congratulations on creating a meaningful work of art. Big Waters is exquisite in every detail. It is a welcome addition to my collection of prized photo books. I couldn't be prouder to have my very own copy!”
